Sketches I

Just some sketches I've been doing to try to keep the art side of my brain working. These are not drawings of actual people. There are proportion issues, but I don't care. I'm just happy to be drawing.

Where I've Been

Life has been pretty hectic this year so far, but things are starting to settle down. I've finally gotten back into regular drawing and so forth. I have several projects on the go right now, including Bone Realm. The projects that have been taking up most of my time right now are for local musicians, one being the stunning progressive rock band Marching Mind. Here's the album cover I painted for them:

I was happy, overall, with how this turned out, but I don't think I'll be doing any more oil paintings anytime soon. Yes, this is a real painting, on a 36"x36" canvas, with water-mixable oils. Some digital process was used later to correct for my poor photography, which is one of the reasons why I decided that this is something I don't want to do again. At least not until I have a huge mansion where I can hang all these giant paintings and thousands of dollars worth of photography equipment and lighting so that I can actually take proper photos of them. Until then, I think I'll just save up for a new Wacom and learn how to do the digital stuff better.

I should be drawing right now. I have some pretty intense projects going on right now that I'm really excited about. So I'm gonna go do that! Feel free to leave some comments.

Bone Realm - Chapter Two

In Chapter Two, I experimented further with styles while working steadily on improving my drawing and the continuity of the character renditions. I felt very uncomfortable working with the backgrounds, and I think it shows pretty clearly. By the end of the chapter I had taken to using a cut-paste blur background, and finally I just filled the whole thing with black. Most of the techniques I tried looked okay, but I found that they all took roughly the same amount of time as it would to simply hand-draw the background from the start.

After posting the final page, I consulted my fellow Comic Furians for constructive criticism, and I received a lot of helpful feedback. I toyed with the idea of reworking the pages of Chapter 2, especially correcting some mistakes and changing/deleting some of the "dialogue", but in the end I decided I was ready to leave this chapter behind for now, and press on into Chapter 3 with my new ideas.

Bone Realm - Chapter One

This is the complete Chapter One of Bone Realm, the webcomic project I've been working on for the past year.

For the first two chapters, I experimented with different styles, trying to figure out the best method of incorporating my detailed, illustrative inking style into a graphic novel format. During Chapter One, I was working mainly with gradients in Photoshop, painstakingly selecting areas and then adding effect fills which looked okay but sort of made me wince at the same time. I was happy with the way my drawing was improving, but there was always some uneasiness with the whole digital process.

Despite the rough edges, Chapter One got along swimmingly with its internet readers, encouraging me to forge ahead into Chapter Two.
